To Be Human: Gender + Gender Roles

Sermon Recap

Benton continued in our To Be Human series, looking at how gender relates to how we reflect God’s image and bring flourishing to the world.

Scripture Reading

Reading: Genesis 1:28, 1 Corinthians 16:13-14, Proverbs 31:16-17

See It

  1. In Genesis 1 and 2, where does God reveal the radical equality between men and women? How does this challenge the ways our world has historically elevated, diminished, or oppressed men and women?

  2. In Genesis 1:28, God blesses both man and woman and gives them the responsibility together. Why would men and women be better together than working apart?

  3. With men, having the distinction of “strength to honor” (1 Corinthians 16:13-14) and women having the distinction of “resiliency to cultivate” (Proverbs 31:16-17). How have you seen those 2 traits over used and under used?

Be It

  1. Posture Open, Position Clear, Process Ongoing: When you encounter someone with a different perspective on gender, which of these three is most difficult for you and how might you practically grow into that?

  2. Where have your views of men and women been shaped more by culture, personal experiences, wounds, or stereotypes than by God’s Word? What might God be inviting you to confess, repent of, or reconsider so that you can see others as his image bearers?

  3. Based on the ideas of apathy, deconstruction, and competition, where is the Holy Spirit revealing that you default to and how might you grow out of one of those areas into a more biblical vision for gender?
