To Be Human: God of Rest
Sermon Recap
This Sunday, we move from the foundational question “who am I?” to “How do we relate to God?” as we look at the God who is rest, and how we can begin living into that.
Scripture Reading
Primary Reading: Genesis 2:1-3
See It
In Genesis 2:1-3, God rests on the seventh day before Adam has done any work. What does it mean that humanity’s first full day of existence was a day of rest, not labor?
Benton says, “we do not rest from work, but instead we work from rest.” What is the difference between those two postures?
Mark Buchanan says, “Rest is not something you do — it’s something God gives... Rest is what happens when your soul remembers God is God, and you’re not.” What are ways we “try” to be God in our lives?
Be It
Where in your life right now are you living like everything depends on you? What would it look like this week to hand that back to God?
If God invited you to practice a weekly Sabbath starting this week, what would that day realistically look like for you, and what’s stopping you from starting?
Choose one of the following steps toward rest to lean into this week:
STOP: Choose something to stop doing so you can slow down.
REST: Identify what kind of rest do you need (mental, physical, spiritual, social, creative, sensory, emotional), and then intentionally make space for that.
DELIGHT: Imagine what a day of enjoyment would like for you? What’s one thing you can do to make room for joy this week?
WORSHIP: Take time to list 5 ways you’ve seen God at work in your life lately that you can thank Him for.
