The Invitation to a New Way

SERMON RECAP

In John 1:35–51, Jesus invites His first followers not with commands, but with a question: “What are you seeking?“—opening the door to curiosity, identity, and transformation. He sees them fully, gives them new and true names, and offers a new way where heaven meets earth through Him. This week, we reflect on how being found by Jesus redefines who we are and how we live.

⸻SEE IT (what do you see God saying and transforming?)

  1. “What are you seeking?” (v. 38) Jesus’ first words in this section are a question, not a command. Why do you think He starts with curiosity? What does that reveal about how God approaches us?

  2. “Come and see” (v. 39, 46) Jesus invites the disciples to explore, not just accept answers. What does this tell us about discipleship? How does this contrast with religious culture that seeks instant answers?

  3. Jesus gives Simon a new name—Peter (v. 42) What does it show about Jesus that He speaks identity and purpose over someone who is not yet living it or forgotten it? How do you think Peter felt being called “the rock” at the start?

  4. “I saw you under the fig tree” (v. 48) Jesus knows Nathanael deeply—even his moments alone. What does this suggest about how God sees and pursues us? How might that change the way we view our own hidden lives?

  5. Heaven open…angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man (v. 51) Jesus refers to Himself as the “ladder” between heaven and earth (echoing Jacob’s dream in Genesis). What does this mean for how God now relates to humanity? What is the “new way” Jesus is pioneering?

⸻BE IT (what is God calling us to do about it?)

  1. Curiosity to Calling: Jesus begins with a question and ends by giving people a new identity. Where is God stirring curiosity in you today—and how might He be using that to call you into something new?

  2. Name Change: If Jesus looked at you and gave you a new name based on your true calling (not your current circumstances or how you might be in this season), what might He call you? What lies or old names do you need to leave behind?

  3. Secret Places Known by God: Like Nathanael under the fig tree, where in your life have you felt “seen” by God? How can knowing He sees the real you—without shame—bring freedom and healing?

  4. Come and See Lifestyle: Who in your life is spiritually curious or searching? How can you extend a “come and see” invitation this week, not with all the answers, but with love and openness?

  5. Heaven Meets Earth in You: If Jesus is the ladder between heaven and earth, and He now lives in us—how does that impact your role in your workplace, family, or community? What might it look like to bring heaven to earth in one small, tangible way this week?
