The Witness

SERMON RECAP

On Sunday we continued our new series “The Transformed Life” examining the testimony of John the baptist in John 1:19-34 and John 3:22-30. John paved the way for the Messiah to begin His ministry by preaching repentance and baptism. Through the word of God, John was the ultimate witness for the person of Jesus. John modeled a ministry of humility, constantly laying down his life for the name of Jesus, teaching us that it is better to decrease so that Christ can increase and that transformation and joy will come from making Jesus known across the world.

⸻SEE IT (what do you see God saying and transforming?)

  1. When asked the question “Who are you?” John the Baptist answers “I am not the Christ” (ch1v20). To John, who he is is not as important as not being Jesus. What does it mean that John would say this about himself? How would you answer that question?

  2. After John’s witness of Jesus, John’s disciples were concerned that more people were going to be baptized by Jesus than John (ch3vs26). What does it mean that his disciples are worried about more people going to Jesus than them? Do you see this same kind of mindset in our world today?

  3. John declares that Jesus is the Lamb of God, who will take away the sins of the world (ch1vs29). What does this declaration mean for our world today? Do you think the name of Jesus can transform the world?

⸻BE IT (what is God calling us to do about it?)

  1. John challenges us to lay down the main character energy of the world. Are there any places in your life where God might be challenging you to become less so that he can become more?

  2. John’s disciples demonstrated a scarcity mindset about the Kingdom of God. What might God be calling you to surrender so that the name of Jesus can be witnessed to the world?

  3. John verbally proclaims the name of Jesus everywhere he goes. What would it look like for you to verbally witness the goodness of Jesus to others in your life? How do you think this could bring transformation for you and for others?
